Learning Journal

Name: Heather Airey
Module: Telecommunications

Although I only posted to original postings to the first two discussions, I posted responses to all three discussions.  I am still trying to learn how to manage my time between a full-time job, family obligations, pregnancy, and this course.  Also, I decided to concentrate on revising my practicum to the detriment of on original posting for the third discussion.
I also found the reading on kids and consumerism on the web to be an eye-opener.  As a parent of a five-year-old who will be using the Internet I now realize that I need to be more aware of the commercial messages that appear when a child looks for information on the Web.  This is especially important since children are using the Web more and more for school research.  It is much different than the advertising that occurs during a Saturday morning TV show.  At least the TV could be shut off during a commercial break.  The ads on the Internet can be more insidious.
The practicum assignment was useful in that I now have a website evaluation form for students.  It also forced me to focus on the qualities that a useful website should have.
I still need time to digest the work done on the lesson plan.  I’m not really sure that I thought it all the way through and I wish I had taken more time to take it on a ‘test run’ myself.  But even if it has a few rough edges, I feel confident that with a minimal amount of tweaking that the plan would be quite feasible.
