Target Population:
    Grade Level: High School (9-12)
    Population Characteristics:
Lesson Grouping: Two-student groups, Whole class

Curriculum Links:  This lesson will be used as an introductory/review for Math B 2-year 2 students.  Trig is usually the first topic in the fall of Math B2.  There is some review from Math B1.  This lesson would help students refresh their memories about trig concepts learned the previous year and perhaps introduce a few new ones.
    Before: Math B1 introductory trig
After: Circle geometry, and trig proofs

Objectives:
·    To review trig concepts form previous year
·    Use Inspiration package to create concept maps linking these ideas

Media Literacy Objectives: High School Level
Basic: Choose most appropriate formats for presenting information
Apply technology tools in content learning
Critical: Creation of non-print text for ideas
Presentation of material in content area

Materials: Computer, text book
Time: 1 85-minute block

Scope & Sequence:
0-5 minutes: outline lesson, give out copies of Inspiration tutorial as a reference (time: 5 minutes)

5-65 minutes: hour of computer time to begin concept maps; look up any familiar information in the text (time: 60 minutes)

65-85 minutes: class discussion; student present concept maps, as a class discuss differences/similarities between individual maps and create a class concept map culled from items on all maps (time: 10 minutes)

Evaluations of Students:
Objective

2 points
Trig concepts
Student can neither recall trig concepts nor does the student use the text to refresh memory
Student only uses what he/she can recall, does not delve into the text to refresh memory
Student recalls a great deal of info, and uses the text, other sources to refresh memory
Use of Inspiration software
Student does not use software to create concept map
Student creates concept map with software but it does not make sense
Student successfully completes concept maps
Use of appropriate formats
Student does not present information in desired format outline vs. concept map)

Student presents information in desired format

Evaluation of Lesson:
Most students should successfully complete this lesson, which in this case would be a score of at least 4 out of 6 possible points.  This would indicate that student retained a good deal of the trig learned the year before.  It also would indicate that the students were familiar and comfortable with concept mapping and the Inspiration software.  This may also indicate that student could be given similar assignments in content areas as a means of further review.
